About us.
Tom Flynn is cohost of the Lost in Redondo podcast. Before that venture he spent his career as a fixture in the Chicago bookseller world. He is a very snappy dresser.
Chris Baker heads the Excelsior Embroidery Co, specializing in comic themed and inspired patches, towels, shirts, or anything else soft enough to get hooped on the machine.
We are best friends who have been talking about comics for 25 years since we met on our first day of college. There we studied the classics, philosophy, religion and history as part of an honors program that required us to take half our classes together. After all these years let’s just say that we’re accustomed to arguing and making the audience laugh to make a point.
As Tom gained experience in podcasting, he kept pestering Chris that the latter’s broad and deep comics knowledge makes for interesting and humorous connections in ways many listeners might appreciate. Chris responded that there were multiple podcasts covering all the main branches of Marvel and was unsure what he could bring to the table. At one point he said “I mean, I have read and own every issue of Alpha Flight. They were my first superhero team book and it drives me nuts people treat them like a punchline. But who would listen to a show about Alpha Flight?”
In short order after this conversation two important things happened to Chris. The first was seeing the panel (above) while reading Daredevil #30 and being inspired by the sentiment. The second was rediscovering the song Oh Canada by Five Iron Frenzy, a staple of his high school experience. As Chris said in a text to Tom with the link to the song “Well, I guess we’re doing this. Finding the theme song is like picking out where to put the Christmas tree in a house you’re looking at. Once you do that it’s all over, you’re innit to winnit.”
But enough about us, what about you?
